How Spinal Asymmetry Compresses The Thoracic Cage

Vertebral rotation is one of the defining features of scoliosis. As the spine curves laterally, the vertebrae rotate along their axis, which pulls the attached ribs with them. On one side of the chest, the ribs rotate forward and inward. On the other hand, they rotate backward and outward. This creates the rib hump that is often visible in scoliosis patients when they bend forward, and it also reduces the space available inside the thoracic cage. 

How Scoliosis Affects More Than Your Spine

The thoracic cage houses the lungs, and its ability to expand determines how much air can be drawn in with each breath. When rib rotation caused by spinal asymmetry reduces the internal volume of that cage, your overall health can suffer.

While younger adult spines adapt more quickly, adults can absolutely achieve meaningful structural improvements, pain reduction, and stabilization—though the process typically requires more time and sustained traction to reshape mature ligaments.

Short-term discomfort, particularly muscle soreness and fatigue in the first several weeks of care, is a normal physiological response to structural loading, not a warning sign. Soreness that resolves within 24 to 48 hours after a session is expected. Sharp pain, radiating, or worsening between sessions warrants a conversation with Dr. Hicks before continuing.
